Recitation Assignment 5

Due at the end of class

To turn in:

1. Analytically speciate the water given TIC = 33.9 ppm-C and pH 7.8.

            a. Estimate answer with Bjerrum.

            b. Calculate an answer using the ionization fractions.

2. Speciate a water open to the atmosphere (PCO2 = ?), with a pH of 7.  If this had started        out as distilled water, how much NaOH was added to obtain this pH?

3. How much calcite would dissolve in a water open to a  PCO2  of 10-4.5Assume ionic  strength = 0.

Use pen and paper to solve the problems and then, if you are feeling lucky, trying to use PhreeqC to solve the same problems. Your other option, once you've solves these problems, is to work on the homework problems.
